Professor Brian Tomlinson

TESOL Professor at Anaheim University (California, US) Visiting Professor at Leeds Metropolitan University (UK)Professor Tomlinson is an expert on teacher training and material development and design, areas where he has published several books and chapters. He is Founder and President of MATSDA (the international Materials Development Association). Among other titles, he has published Developing Materials for Language Teaching (2013),Applied Linguistics and Material Development (2012), Materials Development in Language Teaching (2011) and Language Acquisition and Development (2007).

PLENARY: Developing Intercultural Awareness Through Reflected Experience of Films and Other Visual Media

The presentation will propose and exemplify activities which help learners to understand interactions and empathise with characters in target culture situations, depicted in scenes which feature potentially problematic encounters. The activities would include:

  • 1 predicting

  • 3 improvising
  • 4 analysing
  • 5 problem solving
  • 6 script writing
  • 7 simulating.
